Choking scare today

I am completely paranoid now.

Hannah has a lot more drool in the past month or so.  We have attributed it to beginning of teething, although there are no teeth breaking through yet.  This has caused her to choke on her drool just for a couple of seconds to clear her throat.

Today, she had another choking spell that lasted almost 10 to 15 seconds.  Enough for me to take her out of her exersaucer and try to rub her back to help her.  I didn’t know what else to do.  It didn’t happen again, not even a little one, for the rest of the entire day.

It freaked me out.  I’m not naive.  I know that one of the next symptoms of her Gaucher’s Disease is swallowing issues, especially the inability to get stuff down her throat.   I don’t want it to be a symptom, because that would mean that this disease is progressing faster than we thought.

But then I go back to “is it just another infant thing?”  You know, like the laryngomalacia she had, which at first was thought related to her GD (at a few months old) but later was just the old-fashioned version that she grew out of.

We go see the pediatrician tomorrow for our ear infection follow up.  I’m really afraid to bring up these choking things to him because I don’t want them to be a GD symptom.  But I also want, I mean I also hope that he will tell me it is pretty common for babies to get a lot of drool at this age and sometimes choke on it.

  1. I remember myself worrying about everything little thing (maybe being an older first time mom). I can’t imagine adding the extra issues/concerns you have with Hannah. I hope the doctor can ease your worry on this.

I know that if you didn’t know she had GD, you would attribute to teething…hopefully that is all it is with a LITTLE issue of the swallowing. Mine is a drooling machine these days – think she just leans forward and lets it fall out.

    Keep us posted. Hugs.

  3. I’m sorry about your scare today. I hope that the doctor visit tomorrow can give you some peace 🙂

I can only imagine how frightening that was, Carrie. I know with the little ones we worry about everything– I remember always checking in the middle of the night to make sure they were still breathing. It pains me that your worrying is accompanied by the fears that this awful disease is taking hold. We are keeping Hannah in our prayers, and praying for some good news next week.

  5. Oh my! I can see how that would be scary especially with the knowledge of the GD worries. I am hoping that the doctor’s visit will ease your mind and it’s just attributed to the drool of teething. Take a deep breath and meditate for a minute.

  6. That would be very scarey, God will it was just the drool that made her choke. Praying all goes well at the ped appointment.

  7. Oh my gosh ~ that is scary! Hopefully the doctor can help ease your fears. I am always praying for the best for Hannah.

  8. Oh, bless your heart. I didn’t have a child with this disease, but I had a child with heart issues and I definitely understand the fear of seeing symptoms and wondering if they’re related.

Today is my first day to your blog – I’m over from the blog party. I just wanted to say hi and welcome you to my blog. I’d love for you to meet my family as we’ve been down a similar path.

Hannah is a beautiful child. My heart goes out to you.

  10. That’s happened twice with Bertrand (once in the exersaucer also). Your heart just stops. For weeks afterward I’d check in on him at night because I was afraid he’d have choked in his sleep. 🙁 After reading your post, he hasn’t been out of my sight at all today. Not even to nap. Scary.

There is nothing worse than choking!!!! I struggle with it with my Frances b/c of low tone as well as signs of cranial pressure b/c of her M-CMTC. I will say a prayer for sweet Hannah and YOU!!
