After meeting with the occupational therapist this week and watching Hannah playing with her toys, I realize that we need to get her some more “advanced” toys for her birthday in July. All of the ones she has are very, very basic, and that she is ready for some more interactive toys that will help her develop her fine and gross motor skills.
So I went shopping on Toys R Us online tonight, and I went through at least 600 to 700 toys. Out of all of those, I only found 11 toys that I thought would be really beneficial and helpful to Hannah. That is it! Of course, I am no therapist, so I’m hoping that some of my special needs moms can share their opinions on these toys. I put them all together on a list, so I can do some more research into these. If you have any familiarity with these, please do share your thoughts, good and bad!
Every one of those toys provide challenging opportunities and potential for fun. Eleven sounds like a good number to start with.
You have a lot of parental stamina to review 6-700 toys!
Consider looking at my post named ‘Homing Development’ – just last month – for a tip or two on organizing toys.
Your posts on 5m4sn are very good. Glad you in with that crowd.

Love the toys you picked. We almost got the kitchen for Nathan, but decided to go with an older kitchen. We have the basket ball hoop, and although it’s fun, the novelty sorta wore off quickly. The pop-up toy, the bead track, and the hammer and ball toys are WONDERFUL – I know Nathan could play with those for HOURS … I might get a headache, but … but we do that sort of thing for our kids. OH and the triangle toy looks like GREAT fun!! Love your choices!! Good job Momma!

Bertrand has that leap frog table and loves it! We took two of the legs off (they pop on and off really easily) so it is tilted and he can use it while sitting on the floor.
I like several of the other toys you have up there! We’ll have to go toy shopping for B’s 18-month birthday!

The Leapfrog table is amazing! We don’t own one, but my friend does and both my boys like to play with it (ages 3 and 21 months). We have the Playskool walker toy- it converts from a car to a walker. I would caution you on the “walker” portion of it: it is pretty unsteady. Nolan likes to push it around now (he’s running and walking on his own), but it was pretty useless when he was learning to walk. I’ve heard that the Radio Flyer walker wagon is more steady and better for babies learning how to walk, but we never owned that one.
Definitely go for the gumball roll-a-round toy! Nolan spent HOURS putting things into and out of containers. SO that one looks like a real winner!

We have the Leap Frog table, the FP kitchen, basketball hoop, “toolbox” and gumball toy. My 9 month old loves playing with all of them! Good luck in your decision process 🙂

We have (or had) #s 1, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, and 9. Like someone said earlier – #4 is not so great when kids are learning to walk – it moves too fast and is difficult to slow down. The radio flyer walker is nice because you can weigh it down so it moves slower. You could also try one of the chunky shopping carts for a walker – same thing as the radio flyer, just a bit cheaper usually. My kids also got bored with the basketball hoop fairly quickly. We really liked the kitchen, gumball machine and the triangle toy. Good luck in your shopping!!
